Bonus Iceland HoursIf you visit Iceland you can’t miss the quirky Bónus grocery store pigs. I like to cook my own meals as it allows me to save money, eat healthier and splurge when there is a restaurant I’d really like to try. Iceland is known for being expensive but we were able to find plenty of inexpensive groceries to create delicious meals with. It was tremendously helpful that all of the hostels we stayed in had kitchens with refrigerators, cookware and dishes we could use. We enjoyed granola or omelettes for breakfast and ironically curry was the meal we ate the most, Marissa was an expert at whipping up tasty hot or cold curry!

The hours at Bónus are pretty short. It opens between 10:00am-12:00pm and typically closes around 6:00pm. You have to pay extra for bags so be kind to the environment, save some money and bring your own. My favorite part of grocery shopping in Iceland was trying all of the different chocolate bars and cookies that we don’t have in the states, yum!

Eek – doesn’t look that inexpensive to me! I’m dying to go to Iceland though – not even expensive groceries can bring me down! 🙂

Clearly I’ve been living on a Caribbean island too long when these prices don’t look too bad to me 🙂

Doesn’t look too bad, especially if you’re divining the cost by 3! Iceland looks so wonderful that even higher cost wouldn’t hold me back. If love to go. Depending on what happens, I’m hoping we can get there next year or the year after.

It looks like the grocery store is pretty expensive too. It also looks like you ate a lot of chocolate which I fully support.

I know Iceland is pretty expensive, so the groceries seem about on par. It is interesting to see what you could get for your money, and you have to know that it would cost you more if you went out to eat for the same meal.

  6. Megan Claire says:

We lived by Bonus during our Iceland trip!! I know these prices might not necessarily be inexpensive by US standards, but all you have to do is walk into another grocery store to see the prices double!

  7. Charli says:

LOVE the logo of that supermarket! The cost of living varies so much across the globe, but it’s mad to think you can get such a wide range of foods in such isolated spots. Great article Anna!

  8. Bret @ Green Global Travel says:

We found the same thing in Norway: Groceries were considerably cheaper than eating out, but BOTH were pretty pricey. Scandinavia is not the best for budget travelers, unfortunately. Still loved it!

  9. Jenna says:

Great breakdown–it is fun to see what you were able to get! We stopped in Bonus a few times too for snacks and such, but didn’t have a
kitchen for cooking unfortunately. One of my favorite parts about going to grocery stores is to find the fun cookies, chocolates and chips that are all different and new!
