I’ve always been interested in having a healthy lifestyle. Fortunately growing up in Maine my mom always had huge gardens and I grew up eating fresh vegetables. I love them. From my first yoga retreat to joining a gym for the first time being healthy has always made me happy. I hope that you enjoy my tips!
1. Keep a progress journal
Write down lists of postures that you know and the ones you would like to learn-cross them out as you learn them. Use the journal to keep track of any personal lessons you’ve learned during your practice as well as any questions you might have.
2. Don’t compare
We’ve all done it, gone to yoga class and spent our time staring at the woman who is in a pretzel while we feel like we are just flailing around. Chances are, she’s practiced yoga for many years and the only person you should try to be better than is yourself.
3. Go commando
Yes, I know-it’s a bit funny but Cottonelle® with CleanRipple® Texture is designed to clean better, so you’re clean and confident enough to go commando. Let’s face it, underwear is the last thing you need standing in the way of you and nailing that inversion or setting a new personal record.
4. Invest in a good yoga mat
Once you realize how much easier it is to hold your poses on a sticky mat designed for yogis, you’ll definitely realize it is worth it to get one. They come in all colors and designs so pick one that fits your unique personality.
5. Don’t stay up all night
I know it seems like an obvious one but getting up at the crack of dawn to work out doesn’t make sense if you aren’t going to bed early. Feel free to work out whenever feels best to you. As long as it’s a habit, the time of the day you work out is irrelevant.
6. Treat yourself with kindness
It is great to try to eat healthy in general but don’t beat yourself up if you have something unhealthy. In moderation unhealthy foods are fine. If you miss a day of yoga, don’t sweat it. Just try to practice the following day.
7. Enjoy a yoga festival
There are tons of yoga festivals around the world, it’s a great place to make new yogi friends, learn a lot and a fantastic healthy vacation. One to check out is the Wanderlust 108 Festival in Miami, Florida!
8. Stay mindful and present
Be aware of the amount of screen time that you indulge in daily, consider how much screen time you have in an entire week. If it seems like too much try to think of the things you could cut out day to day. Perhaps a tv show, phone app or whatever you think. Also be aware of how you schedule your time, what you are eating and mindful of your thought patterns.
9. Focus on your breathing
Most yoga instructors will talk you through prompts to help you focus on your breathing. Good breathing techniques help to clear your mind, increase your concentration and help you flow from one pose to the next. Try to breath on rhythm with the rest of the class if you can.
10. Drink tons of water
This one might seem obvious, but drinking enough water boosts your physical performance, brain function energy levels and keeps your skin looking smooth and hydrated. Although it’s an obvious one, it cannot be understated.
