Sabine, Martine and I were thrilled to to embark on a SuperJeep expedition the the Skjaldbreiður Volcano in Iceland with Discover Iceland Super-Jeep Tours. The paved road we were driving down quickly became covered in snow, so we stopped to let some air out of the tires so that the tires can become wider to drive over the snow without sinking too much. Our driver and guide Georg was a wealth of knowledge about Iceland, he shared all kinds of interesting facts with us. Driving up the steep snow covered hills was quite the adventure, the jeep pulled right and left all of the way up. Sometimes it took a few tries but we always made it. Georg was an excellent driver and although it felt scary at times I always felt safe. It turned out because of the rainy snowy weather conditions we were unable to drive up the volcano. We parked in a valley where they surprised us with some Hákarl, or traditional Icelandic rotten shark. Easily the most disgusting thing I have ever eaten. I will try any food once though! They had some chocolate to get rid of the gross lingering taste. After that they prepared a wonderful barbecue of delicious kebabs. Icelanders love have barbecues, rain or shine! We had grilled bananas topped with melted chocolate and whipped cream for dessert! Everyone was incredibly friendly and we had so much fun! I would love to do another tour with them in the summer!
