The Best of Algeria’s Tourism

Algeria is indeed Africa’s biggest country, and despite a long colonial past and close proximity to Europe -the War of Independence was infamous for its acts of brutality on the part of the French- Algeria is largely undiscovered by the mass tourism market, meaning that the many beautiful and historic sights and attractions are refreshingly quiet and unspoilt. French is widely spoken here, and this beautiful North African country is Muslim. Alcohol is generally available, however, and women are not obliged to cover their hair unless entering a mosque.

Algiers
The capital, Algiers, has more than its fair share of beautiful attractions. The grandiose Notre Dame d’Afrique is undoubtedly among the foremost of these, and is perched on top of a mountain (accessible either by cable car or by driver), commanding views of both the city and the bay beneath. The cathedral is free to enter, and is a must-see when in the Algerian capital. Equally, Le Jardin d’Essai du Hamma is another free attraction that is worth a few hours of any tourist’s time. Popular with local families, these lush gardens offer something of an oasis from the metropolis, and the diversity of the plant and animal life to be found here will impress even jaded visitors. While in the capital, try to make time too for Le Musee National Des Beaux Arts, which not only houses impressive artworks, but has beautiful landscaped gardens.

Roman History
Those with an interest in ancient history will be in their element in Algeria- there is a wealth of Roman cities and ruins to be discovered here. Cuicul Roman Ruins in Djemila are truly stunning- here you can walk down streets, see intact arches and amphitheatres with just the company of yourselves and your guide (it is worth hiring a local guide to get the most from the experience). Timgad in Batna was near the southern border of the Roman Empire and similarly has impressive ruins -and a museum, although sadly it has been closed for a while due to a lack of funding- and a visit to Algeria wouldn’t be complete without a visit to at least one of these.

Sand, Sand, Sand
From pretty beaches to the Sahara, Algeria has plenty of the golden stuff! The Sahara is punishing terrain, but with adequate preparation can offer amazing experiences- at night, thousands of stars which just aren’t visible in Europe or in big centres of population appear in the vast skies. Contact a specialist company -ideally before travel to Algeria- to ensure that you stay safe if you plan on venturing into the desert. As with all places, it’s best to ensure that you have protection in place in case anything goes amiss- Algeria insurance is an affordable necessity. If you prefer your sand with an accompanying sea, check out Hadjadj Plage on the northern coast. Located by the city of Mostaganem, Hadjadj Plage is all mountainous dunes, golden sand, and warm Mediterranean waters.
